Amend

I did not realize I could deduct medical expenses and medical insurance premium until this year. It looks like I could have been doing that for the last three years. How do I amend those past years. Can I pay TurboTax to do that.

Amend

There is no extra fee to amend a tax return that you prepared using TurboTax unless you upgrade to a higher version of the software--in which case you pay the difference between the software you used for the first return and the higher version.

Before you amend--make sure you understand how using medical expenses may or may not affect your refund or tax due.  It is actually very difficult to use the medical expense deduction because there are two hard thresholds to meet.    Using this deduction is based on your AGI and on itemizing deductions such as mortgage interest, property tax, etc. etc.

MEDICAL EXPENSES

The medical expense deduction has to meet a rather large threshold before it can affect your return. The amount of medical (including dental, vision, etc.)  expenses that will count toward itemization is the amount that is OVER 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You should only enter the amount that you paid in 2023—do not include any amounts that were covered by insurance or that are still outstanding.  Of course, your medical expenses plus your other itemized deductions still have to exceed your standard deduction before you will see a difference in your tax due or refund.

To enter your medical expenses go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Medical>Medical Expenses

2023 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS

SINGLE $13,850  (65 or older/legally blind + $1850)

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $13,850  (65 or older/legally blind + $1500)

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $27,700  (65+/legally blind) )  + $1500 per spouse

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD  $20,800 (65 or older/blind)  + $1850)

You would need to look at each past year return to see if you used standard deduction or itemized deductions, and look at each year's AGI to see if there would be any effect.   These are on lines 11 and 12 of those Form 1040's.  If you think amending will have an effect--

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.
