1099-R Gross distribution doesn't match RMD because some funds sent to charities

My 1099-R shows Gross Distribution and Taxable Amount are the same but they are lower than my RMD amount because some of the funds were sent to charities.    Turbotax later asks what the full RMD amount was and I specified that.    Is this a problem that will get red-flagged on my return?

1099-R Gross distribution doesn't match RMD because some funds sent to charities

The amount on the 1099-R is supposed to include the amount sent to charities. The IRA custodian might have sent you a separate 1099-R for the amount sent to charities. If so, the two 1099-Rs together would cover your RMD. If the IRA custodian did not report the distributions to charities at all, the problem is with the 1099-R, not with TurboTax.

1099-R Gross distribution doesn't match RMD because some funds sent to charities

I received three 1099-R forms, one for the full RMD but having never dealt with RMDs before I thought it should just be for the net amount (RMD minus charitable deductions made via my custodian).  So they sent me two corrected 1099-R forms one for the taxable amount and one specifying the amount given to charities.  But Turbotax doesn't see them that way.  When I add the second one (charitable contribution amount) Turbotax says my total tax goes up.

Both forms are marked as "CORRECTED" and one has Box 7 Distribution Code: [7]  and the other says [Y7].  Each form shows Gross Distribution and Taxable amount as the same number, and both say Box 2b "Taxable amount not determined" as checked with [X].

I am totally confused.

After you enter each 1099-R you have to continue through all the questions. You will come to a screen that says "Do any of these situations apply to you?" If the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box is checked on the 1099-R and you are over 70½ years old, one of the situations listed will be "I transferred all or part of this money directly to charity." Check the box for that situation and continue through the questions. You will come to a screen that asks how much the IRA custodian transferred directly to charity. Enter the amount and it will be excluded from your taxable income, so your tax will go down. The amount sent to charities will be excluded from the taxable amount on Form 1040 line 4b and the QCD box will be checked on line 4c.

Are you counting the QCD as part of your RMD?  Just in case you didn't know the QCD can be used for the RMD.  So the first 1099R for the full amount was probably right.  But since you got 2 corrected 1099Rs then when you enter each 1099R you say the full amout of that specific 1099R is the RMD.  So for the RMD questions you enter the amount from that 1099R box 1 as the RMD.

I did all that, answered all the questions.   Entered the values from the 1099-R with the taxable remainder of the RMD and then added the second 1099-R with the contributed amount and said that it was donated to charity.  Tax total still went up compared to having just entered the first 1099-R that shows the amount that should be taxable.   Something is still wrong.

You can't tell anything just from the total tax. Look at your Form 1040 or 1040-SR. Is line 4a the total amount of both 1099-Rs? Is line 4b the amount from just the taxable 1099-R? On line 4c is box 2, QCD, checked? If the answers to those three questions are not all yes, what exactly is on lines 4a, 4b, and 4c? Do you see the amount of either 1988-R somewhere else on Form 1040?

Were you at least 70½ years old on the date that you made the first distribution to a charity?
