I have a 1099-R from a pension. The program is treating it like an IRA. On the 1040-SR the gross distribution amount is entered on line 4b instead of line 5a. Both line 5a and 5b are blank?

GO Back and edit that 1099-R form.
Near box 7 is a box labelled IRA/SEP/SIMPLE
That box needs to be NOT checked
Go back to your 1099-R
On sidebar

did not work for me

What did not work for you? Please be specific what part of the process is not working
so as the subject heading says, Turbotax insists on treating the 1099-R form for my wife's pension as if it is an IRA subject to RMDs because of her age. So either I have to agree with TT that it is an RMD and that she took it or , as it turns out, if I enter that it is a non-qualified plan (it is a qualified plan) then TT does not insist on there being an RMD
Here's the thing.
Even Pensions are subject to RMDs....but the Pension system administrator has already handled making sure that the amount has been set up to follow whatever IRS RMD distribution rules exist for that pension...even when the amount doesn't change every year.
Once a person reaches age 72, the RMD question is then asked for every qualified pension 1099-R distribution...IRA or not...so you will see this RMD question every year for her pension, from now on. For that Pension 1099-R form, you just indicate that the distribution was the RMD...all of it.
For things like IRAs and 401k/TSP accounts, where you control how much you take out every year...those you do have to be careful to take the proper RMD every year, once you reach age 72, (or 73 starting in 2023).
Thanks.
