1099-R Box 7 on roth ira distribution-what number/letter should be put there?

Not sure what to put there. Since it's a Roth, I pay no taxes, correct? But I want to be sure to put the proper value in Box 7.

Code J (early distribution), T (ROTH IRA distribution with exception) or Q (qualified distributions) would be used for distributions from a individual ROTH IRA. The code should be listed on the 1099-R form you received from the pension company.

If it was a normal distribution, meaning it was after you reached the age of 59 1/2 and you held the investment for at least five years, then there would be no tax or penalty on the distribution. Otherwise, the amount you contributed would not be taxable but the income portion may be subject to tax and penalty.

Enter the Form 1099-R as received.  Do not change the code in box 7.

The code for an ordinary distribution from a Roth IRA is reported only with code J, T or Q.  If you are under age 59½ at the time of the distribution, code J will be used.  If you were over age 59½ and the form has code T, be sure to indicate to 2024 TurboTax, when asked, whether or not you had a Roth IRA account before 2020.

(Code B is used for distributions from a designated Roth account in a 401(k), 403(b) 457(b) or the federal TSP, never for a distribution from a Roth IRA.)
