You do not need to input the control number (box D) on your W-2.

 

A Control Number (box D) is used by many payroll departments to uniquely identify a W-2 in their system. If your W-2 doesn't have one, it's no big deal.

You are asking from the Retirement section.  If you actually have a 1099-R, it does not have Box d; and you are entering it as a W-2 by mistake.  A 1099-R goes here:

Federal > Wages and Income > Retirement.
