Question

When I plugged in my income, it was noted I overpaid social sec tax and would get money back. I am ready to file but the overpayment was not mentioned again. Suggestions?

Did you personally have two or more employers with different EIN's and the total of all Social Security Taxes withheld was more than $8,853.60?

You would see the overpayment on line 11 of your Schedule 3 and also on line 31 of your form 1040. It will be included in your refund.

You can view your form 1040 while working in the online version of TurboTax by following these steps:

While working on your return in the Federal section of TurboTax:

   1.  Choose the Tax Tools icon on your left menu bar

   2.  Tools

   3.  View Tax Summary

   4.  Choose the Preview my 1040 on your left menu bar

If you worked for the same employer all year and they withheld too much SS tax, you have to get a refund from them.

If you worked for 2 or more different employers, and the total of all SS withholding was more than the maximum allowed, you will claim a refund on Schedule 3.

(Note that things can get a little strange if you worked for one company but they changed payroll processors during the year, or if you worked for 2 companies but they used the same payroll processor and you only got 1 W-2.  You will have to provide more details if you need assistance.)
