Question

TurboTax did not include taxes on my social security this year, therefore I now owe federal taxes. Why did TurboTax not catch this before finalizing my taxes?

I called IRS and they said that no taxes on social security does not take effect until the 2026 tax year. TurboTax you need to update your program.

There is no such thing as "no taxes on Social Security" for 2025 or for 2026.   Social Security will still be taxable if you have other income.

USER ERROR WITH SOCIAL SECURITY ENTRY

We have seen a lot of people who made a user error with the entry of their SSA1099.   The screen right after you enter the SSA1099 asks you if you lived in certain foreign countries in 2025.   If you skipped past that screen or answered incorrectly, your Social Security was not taxed correctly.   Look at your Form 1040 and see if line 6b was left blank or has a zero due to that mistake.  The IRS is catching those mistakes and correcting them by reducing your refund or increasing your tax due.   It is really so important to read every screen slowly and carefully from top to bottom as you prepare your tax return to avoid errors.

Don’t know what the IRS told you.  Either they told you wrong or you misunderstood.  Nothing about Social Security has changed. It can still be taxable.  But There is a new $6,000/12,000 Enhanced Senior Deduction if you are 65 or older for 2025-2028.   That will be on 1040/1040SR line 13b.
