The taxability of your pension income is not dependent on whether or not you had withholding taken out. If the amount is taxable, it will show up on Line 4b. If it is nontaxable it will show up only on Line Line 4a. The taxes withheld are applied to your tax return no matter if the amount is taxable or not. If you paid the tax, you will get credit for those taxes.
Enter your 1099-R into the retirement section, make sure to answer all of the questions after it is entered, and TurboTax will calculate any taxable amounts and will place your income on the correct Line on your Form 1040. The entries will not be correct until you go all the way through the Retirement section. You'll get a 1099-R if you received $10 or more from a retirement plan. Here's how to enter your 1099-R in TurboTax:
- Open (continue) return if you don't already have it open.
- Inside TurboTax, search for 1099-R and select the Jump to link in the search results.
- Answer Yes on the Your 1099-R screen, then select Continue.
- If you land on the Your 1099-R Entries screen instead, select Add Another 1099-R.
- Select how you want to enter your 1099-R (import or type it in yourself) and then follow the instructions.
