It depends. A likely reason the $8,000 is being flagged as an excess because you are ineligible to contribute to a Roth IRA this year. The most probable cause is that your income exceeds the IRS limits for 2025.

Another common reason is an error, such as accidentally entering the $8,000 contribution twice. If the first $8,000 was already processed or is pending, any subsequent attempt to contribute would be flagged as an excess because you have already reached your annual limit. Double check in Deductions and Credits that it is only entered once.

Finally, you must have "earned income" (like wages or a salary) to contribute to an IRA. if you didn't have at least $8,000 in taxable compensation for 2025, the system will flag the amount that exceeds your earnings. To resolve this, you can contact your brokerage to "remove the excess contribution" before the tax deadline to avoid the 6% IRS penalty. Since it is April 15th today, you may be able to do this online on your brokerage's website.

If you need extra time, filing an extension by April 15, 2026, moves your submission deadline to October 15. But remember any taxes owed are still due in full by the original April 15 date.
