1040 through TurboTax had the SSN Benefit as Zero (0) even though I entered the amount of SSN Benefit correctly. The IRS as has amended the return and now we owe them nearly $1,000.

Where exactly is the "income field" that contains zero? Do you mean Box 5 on the screen in TurboTax where you enter your SSA-1099? Or do you mean that line 6a or 6b on your Form 1040 or 1040-SR is zero?

Look at the actual Form 1040 or 1040-SR that you filed. If there is an amount on line 6a and zero on line 6b you probably incorrectly answered the question about living abroad on the next screen after you enter your SSA-1099. The question asks whether you lived in one of the eight countries listed in the question, and you are a U.S. citizen. If you did not live in one of those countries you have to answer No.
