If Social Security income is the only income she  earned in 2016, it is not taxable or reportable, and she has no reason to file a tax return

If she received other taxable income, she may need to file a return, and include her Social Security income.

To enter your Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099 (if other taxable income received)

  • Click on Federal Taxes
  • Click on Wages and Income
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button
