Question

My 1099-R and W-2 show state income tax withholdings but TurboTax isn't including them in my itemized deductions and the automated help is useless. Any suggestions?

2)  Are you sure the are not included?  Did you look at line 5a of the Schedule A to see what's in that line?

Things to try:

2) Edit each 1099-R and w-2.

...........Make sure the $$ withheld are in the correct state boxes

.............Box 14 for the 1099-R

.................Box 17 for the W-2

3)  Delete either the W-2, or the 1099-R entirely.  Then re-enter one of them manually and see if the state $$ show up.  If that works do the same to the other form.  DO NOT upload a Picture or a PDF file off either form....doing that can result in some massive errors.

Thanks for the suggestions. I figured out two things. First, TurboTax doesn't show state withholdings in the summary even though they are deductible. I consider this a problem that could easily be rectified. Second, because of the SALT income limits, SALT deductions may be reduced, but in my opinion should still be shown with a corresponding explanation for the reduction. Also, you mentioned reviewing Schedule A. This is a good suggestion except that TurboTax makes it extremely difficult to see actual forms until you print. Previous versions were better and had a view forms option. Thanks again for your help.

Yeah.....the online program doesn't have a "Forms Mode" like the desktop software does.

They may change the Online software in the future  (next 10 years?) to make it easier...but the user would still have to pay for the software first, to see those forms.   Right now, they only allow a look at the form 1040 without paying (For the "Online'  folks)
