Medicare Premiums should be deducted from total earning from SSA on our tax bill. Why not?

Medicare premiums that are paid from your Social Security benefits do not reduce your total Social Security income. You have to enter the full amount of benefits shown in box 5 of your Form SSA-1099. It's the same as if you received the full amount of Social Security benefits and wrote a separate check for the Medicare premiums instead of having the premiums paid out of your benefits.


Medicare premiums are a medical expense, no matter how you pay them. If you claim itemized deductions the Medicare premiums can be included in your medical expenses. If you entered the Medicare premiums when you entered your SSA-1099 TurboTax will automatically include the premiums in your medical expenses.


"Why not?" This is how the tax law treats Medicare premiums. If you think the law should treat them differently, write to your representative in Congress.
