Question

I made an early distribution from my Roth last year. The distribution was less than the conversion I made into it more than 5 years prior. How do I key this in?

The software is assuming taxes and penalties are owed when in fact taxes were paid at time of conversion, the conversion was over 5 years prior, the amount does not exceed conversion amounts from that tranche.

You have the gross amount in box 1. Box 2 lists the taxable amount. Do you have a number in box 2? What about box 7 - what did the brokerage list for the reason? If it has a J, that would be early distribution with penalties There should be a B in box 7 for the ROTH account.

You may need to contact your broker and see if a corrected form needs to be issued or learn more about your circumstances.

If the distribution was from a Roth IRA (not from a designated Roth account in an employer plan), you must click the Continue button on the page that lists the Forms 1099-R that you have entered.  In the pages that follow, 2025 TurboTax will ask you for the amount of your Roth conversions made before 2021 and that information will be used to prepare Form 8606 Part III.
