Solved

I added a new IRA Administrator with monthly distributions this year, why isn't it carrying over to my MA state return from federal return and how to add?

Why isn't IRA distribution carrying over from Federal to MA state return?
Best answer by DanaB27

When you go through the state return you should get the screen "Taxable IRA/Keogh Distributions" which lists the amount from your 1099-R.  Here you can enter "Other contributions previously taxed by Massachusetts" and "Total Distributions received in previous years" to calculate the MA  state taxable amount.

If you do not get this screen then please verify that you entered your state information when entering your 1099-R:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”

Thanks Dana, my IRA is pre tax, I do have the state codes entered in the federal return and it does show up correctly there, did I misunderstand your response by chance?  I also have not been allowed to enter the rollover form 5498 anywhere that I've seen.  With other rollovers I haven't had the issue but maybe/probably I've lost some sense:-) .

Thanks,

Sue

To clarify, do you see the screen "Taxable IRA/Keogh Distributions" which lists the amount from your 1099-R when you go through your state return? Since your contributions are pre-taxed and haven't been taxed you won't be entering anything on this screen and the distribution will be taxable in MA.

You do not enter Form 5498 anywhere on the return.

You mention a rollover, did you do a rollover (move funds from your IRA account to a similar retirement account) instead of taking a distribution (but you mentioned monthly distributions in your original question)?

If you had a rollover then during the federal interview you will be able to select in the follow-up questions (after you entered the 1099-R information) that you did a rollover.

  1. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  2. Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and enter your 1099-R
  3. Continue "Tell us if you moved the money through a rollover or conversion" and select "I rolled over some or all of it to an IRA or other retirement account within the time limits (normally 60 days)"
  4. Continue answering the questions.
