Question

How do you get access to the form 1040? I need to have access to lines 6A and 6B to enter a repayment to a insurance company from my social security lump sum payment?

Repayments of disability benefits to a private insurance company (often due to an SSDI lump-sum award) are handled based on the amount repaid and the year it was originally received as income.  To enter in TurboTax:

  1. Enter the Social Security (SSA-1099) in the Federal > Wages & Income under Retirement Plans and Social Security and select Social Security (SSA-1099).
  2. Enter your SSA-1099 exactly as it appears. On the screen asking, "Did you receive any lump-sum payments for 2024 or earlier?", select Yes.
  3. TurboTax will guide you through the "Lump-Sum Election" method, which helps prevent a large back-payment from pushing you into a higher tax bracket. This will correctly populate Line 6a (total benefits) and Line 6b (taxable portion) on your 1040.

You do not have direct access to forms and schedules when you use online TurboTax.   All of your entries must be made via the interview screens.

To enter information from a SSA1099

Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.
