Question

How do I stop turbo going into a California return when income was below tax line, I only received Social Security, and I did not have any state taxes taken out?

Social Security retirement benefits are not taxed at the state level in California. If you are not required to file a state return, and you would like to delete the state, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to your account .
  2. From the left menu, select State and then select Continue on the Let's get your state taxes done right screen.
  3. On the Status of your state returns screen select Delete to the right of your state, then answer Yes.

You can delete your state return in TurboTax Online as long as you haven't paid TurboTax fees. If you don't see the option to delete the state, you probably paid the fees.

@Judy1953  You will need to file a Part Year Resident return for California and the state you lived in previously.

You can take your total amounts for the year for your Retirement Benefits and  Allocate an amount to each state, based on % of year you lived there.
