You do not "send" your 1099R.  You enter your 1099R into the software when you prepare your federal return.   Information flows from the federal return to the state return.   All of the information is sent electronically when you e-file.

To enter your retirement income, Go to  Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security>IRA  401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.

But....PA does not tax retirement income.

If you are mailing your tax return, you would need to include any forms with it had taxes withheld, such as a W-2 or a Form 1099-R.

The PA Department of Revenue does NOT require the submission of most 1099's for individual personal income tax purposes (with form PA-40), unless there is PA income tax withheld.

If you are e-filing your tax return, the tax data from the Form 1099-R is already included in the e-file being transmitted and there is no need to send in any tax forms that show taxes withheld.

To enter a form 1099-R

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the Start or Update button

Taxpayers should keep copies of these supporting attachments for their records along with a copy of their tax return.
