If you are filing a joint tax return, you must enter ALL of your combined income including the SSA1099 for your spouse's Social Security disability benefits. when you prepare your federal return.  Social Security is taxable on a federal return if you have other kinds of income.   Your information flows to the state return, and the software will follow the tax laws for your state. NC will not tax the SS.

Social security benefits are not taxable if it is a person's only income.  If the person has other income (investments, pensions, etc.) or their spouse has income, the benefit may be taxable, and must be reported on the tax return, and the program will figure it out.  Some states will not tax the benefit on the state tax return even though it may be taxable on a federal return.  If you think the state is incorrectly taxing the benefit, you will need to call customer support and speak to someone who knows the tax laws for NC.

@faithfulfox82 you will report the SS on the federal tax return.  Whatever is reported on line 6B of the federal tax return (the taxable portion, if any) will be deducted automatically on line 9 of the NC State tax return.

While the SS has to be reported, it is not taxed by NC

does that help?
