Question

Can I file short form for a relative that passed away on 01/04/18? She did have income and paid income tax for the month of January.

Yes, you can file a Tax Return for your relative. You will need to set up a separate account for this Tax return.

There are no longer any "short" forms. Starting in 2018, everyone uses the same Form 1040, which also includes new Schedules 1 thru 6.

As you start the TurboTax interview for your relative, under the Personal Information section,  you should choose "I'm preparing this return for ______ who is deceased".  Next, you should enter the date of death. From here you can prepare his return as you normally would.

For more information about the decedent's final return and estate return requirements, check out IRS Pub 559 Survivors, Executors, and Administrators: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p559.pdf.
