How can I pay my federal taxes?

There are several ways to pay your federal tax bill in TurboTax. Go here if you can't pay your taxes.

You can pay your federal taxes directly from your checking or savings account with direct debit.

  • There's no fee for direct debit.
  • The money is withdrawn from your bank account on the date you specify (if filing by tax deadline) or when your return is accepted (if filing after tax deadline).
  • The IRS will withdraw the entire owed amount from your bank account. Direct debit for partial payments isn't available.
  • We'll tell you if your state accepts direct debit when you file.

If you're e-filing, choose Withdraw the money from my bank account when we ask how you want to pay your federal taxes.

If you're paper filing, you won't see a direct debit option, but you can do this instead:

  1. In TurboTax, select Pay by check when asked how you want to pay your taxes.
  2. Follow the instructions to print a paper copy of your return.
    • Throw out the 1040-V voucher that prints out. You won't need it.
  3. Go to the IRS Direct Pay site and follow the instructions to submit your payment.

You can pay for your federal taxes with your credit/debit card through a third-party payment processor. The processor charges a convenience fee.

If you're e-filing, choose Charge my credit card when we ask how you want to pay your federal taxes.

If you're paper-filing, you won't see a credit/debit option, but you can do this instead:

  1. In TurboTax, select Pay by check when asked how you want to pay your taxes.
  2. Follow the instructions to print a paper copy of your return.
    • Throw out the 1040-V voucher that prints out. You won't need it.
  3. Go to the IRS Pay Your Taxes by Debit or Credit Card site, choose a payment processor, and pay your tax bill there.

When filing your return, select Pay by check when asked how you want to pay.

  • Make your check or money order out to United States Treasury.
  • Make sure these four items are on the front of the check or money order:
    • Social Security number (or ITIN)
    • Taxpayer's name
    • Your mailing address
    • Daytime phone number
  • Mail the check or money order to the IRS, along with Form 1040-V, postmarked by the April 15, 2024 tax filing deadline to avoid the late payment penalty. We'll prepare Form 1040-V for you.
  • The address to mail your payment will be on your Form 1040-V. You can also get it on page 2 of the IRS 1040-V instructions.
