I accepted another job that is 400 miles from my home but still within my home state. I have rented a home + utilities & insurance where I live during the week. This position is a stepping stone to a higher position. I anticipate a 1-2 year length of employment in this position before returning to my home. I commute every week + travel extensively while I am in this position. I had to lease a vehicle as well in order to commute. I intend to purchase the vehicle at the end of the lease so mileage limitations are not a consideration. I am not reimbursed for any of the home costs or commuting since I am at a professional level. Can I consider this rental home a home office since I do work from it in addition to my office? What deductions do I qualify for? When I am at my true home during the weekends and holidays, I also use part of my home as an office which we have historically claimed.

Are you an employee of the company where federal income taxes, Social Security taxes and Medicare taxes are withheld from your wages each pay period?
if you receive a W-2, then your unreimbursed business expenses are NOT deductible. Commuting costs are never deductible.
