Can I get a stimulus check if I was claimed on someone taxes

Everything is based on your 2020 status and income.  Forget about 2019 / 2018!

When you fill out your 2020 taxes shortly, there will be questions at the end of the TurboTax interview to calculate how much stimulus you are owed, which will increase your refund.  It will appear on Line 30 of Form 1040. But don't rush to file as Turbo Tax and others are rushing to program in the 2nd stimulus that was passed into law that week.  Be sure the correct stimulus is listed on Line 30 before hitting the 'send' button!

The stimulus check will go to the person who claimed you.  Because you could be claimed as a dependent, you would not be entitled to a stimulus check.   I am sorry that the law worked out like that and was hoping that congress would do something for college age kids who did not qualify.

@MissMCJ - not true; if she is not a dependent of someone else in 2020, she is eligible, REGARDLESS of the 2019 status.  Further, even if someone else claimed her (say she wasn't married), that other person WOULD NOT get the stimulus as only dependents under the age of 17 are eligible for the $500 and $600 stimulus payments.

here are the eligibility requirements and it's based on your 2020 information:

A1. Generally, if you are a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien, you will receive an Economic Impact Payment of $1,200  ($2,400  for a joint return) if you (and your spouse if filing a joint return)  are not a dependent of another taxpayer and have a Social Security number valid for employment and your adjusted gross income (AGI) does not exceed:

  • $150,000  if married and filing a joint return
  • $112,500 if filing as  head of household or
  • $75,000  for eligible individuals using any other filing status
Your payment will be reduced by 5% of  the amount by which your AGI exceeds the applicable threshold above.

You are not eligible for a payment if any of the following apply to you:

  • You may be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return (for example, a child or student who may be claimed on a parent’s return or a dependent parent who may be claimed on an adult child’s return).
  • You do not have a Social Security number that is valid for employment.
  • You are a nonresident alien.
The following are also not eligible: a deceased individual or an estate or trust.

@MissMCJ  See post above.  Yes you can get it on your 2020 return if you are not a dependent in 2020.
