Who is considered a veteran? Military retiree or anyone who has served in the military?

I'm filing my taxes and Turbo Tax is inquiring as to whether or not I am a veteran. So my question is: Who is considered a veteran? Military retiree or anyone who has served in the military? 

I get mixed answers to the question.

A veteran is anyone who served in the military at anytime in their life.
