So as a military service member stationed in illinois im not required to pay state taxes from my military checks. So why is it making me pay in?

If you mean they are taking withholding, you would have to contact DFAS for an adjustment.

In the personal info section of TurboTax, be sure to enter your HOR/SLR as your "State of Residence." Then, if your only income was your active duty military pay, answer No to the question about living in another state, and No to the question about making money in another state.

And be sure to check the box that you served in the Armed Forces in 2019.
