If you husband was deployed in a combat zone he will have a Q code nontaxable combat pay in box 12 on his W-2. If he wasn't deployed to combat zone then leave the question about the combat zone blank.

Please follow these steps to select the combat zone and enter the deployment date:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click “My Info” tab in the black bar on the side of your screen.
  3. Click “Edit” next to your spouse's name.
  4. Scroll down to the last question in Section 1: “My spouse is a member or former member of the U.S. Armed Forces (active, reserve or National Guard)”
  5. Mark the appropriate radio button and click “Continue”.
  6. Continue until "Which combat zone or hazardous duty area did Jane serve in during 2020?" screen select the combat zone (if you are not sure you will have to ask your spouse)
  7. Enter 01/01/2020 for date deployed

Please be aware that if you husband received nontaxable combat pay and you qualify for the Earned Income Credit (EIC) then you can select to include to nontaxable combat pay for the EIC calculation if it is more beneficial.

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on the Search box on the top and type "EIC"
  3. Click on “Jump to EIC”
  4. Continue "Do you want to include your combat pay in your income?"  and select "Yes" and "Continue", write down your EIC and refund
  5. Click "Back" and select "No" and then click "Continue".
  6. Compare new EIC and refund with written down amounts.
