Military Spouse State Filing

My husband is active duty military. For the last two years when we have filed jointly, per our tax expert, I was able to get all of my state tax from VA back. His home

of residency is NY but we met and got married in VA. I was told I didnt need to pay NY taxes though. I am very confused on how exactly the Military Spouse Residency Relief Act works.
