SC, I have never had this problem before. The refund was there until the end of review of state taxes.

it sounds like you entered expenses for your reserve duty.  Since South Carolina doesn't tax reserve income, SC assumed you entered those expenses already in your federal return. You need to go to your state return and not report those expenses.

 

 

Go through your SC State return and as you navigate through your return:

  1. Go to Here's the income that South Carolina handles differently
  2.  
  3. Go to military There are two components: National Guard and military expenses and National Guard and Training and drill pay
  4. If you enter expenses, either your tax refund shrinks or your taxes due increase for the reason i mentioned above.
  5. If you enter military guard training and drill income. Your refund rises or your tax due decreases. This is because SC excludes your military reserve training pay.
