Question

Do I fill out a W-9 for providing my services (LLC business) to another business?

I'm a LLC and a business hired my business for a service (massage) for her company event. She wants me to fill out a W-9, but as an LLC and what TurboTax says below, I'm unsure if I should. She has access to her receipts as she paid via an invoice.

TurboTax says:

If you paid a non-employee individual $600 or more for contract or freelance work during the year, you are required to file a 1099-NEC form. The person you paid needs the 1099-NEC to report that income on their taxes (think of it as a W-2 for non-employees).

For example, if you paid a graphic designer $800 to make a logo and another $400 to design a flyer, you'd file a 1099-NEC at the end of the year for $1,200 and the designer will report the 1099-NEC on their return.

If you paid a company or firm for services performed, don't file a 1099-NEC - that's only for individuals.

Yes, an LLC is generally required to provide its customers with a form W-9 if it is acting as an independent contractor providing services. You will use the LLC's EIN on form W-9.

The customer will use information provided on form W-9 to issue the LLC with form1099-NEC.

Please read this TurboTax Help article.
