Solved

Can I claim my adult daughter as a dependent? I paid the rent on her home for the entire year. She did not earn enough to require filing a tax return for 2018.

Adult daughter does not live with me.

Paid entire year of rent for her home.

Paid some living expenses: groceries, gas, occasional utility bill.

If you provided more than half of her support then in order to claim your daughter she would have to had earned less than $4,150.  If she did then yes, you can claim her.  If she earned more than that, then you cannot claim her.

I think you just answered my question.  She was separated at that time and still is. Quite possible that she and her spouse will be filing jointly for 2018.
