Why is the depreciation on a rental property not fully taken

I would think the depreciation on a rental property is the FMV(i.e 233K)/27.5 every year.  Last year the proprty was not rented out for a couple of months . I was expecting the entire depreciation to be taken ($8473) on line 18 of Schedule E and a loss to come out of Schedule E that was to be carried forward.

However on my 2016 I noticed that the depreciation on line 18 of Schedule E is $3233 . This does compute to make the loss for the year $0.

When would the depreciation be not fully taken OR disallowed ? I want to keep accumulating the losses till I sell.

Why is the depreciation on a rental property not fully taken

It should have been taken.  Continue to claim a deduction for depreciation on property used in your rental activity even if it is temporarily idle (not in use). For example, if you must make repairs after a tenant moves out, you still depreciate the rental property during the time it is not available for rent.  Sitting Idle is different than using for personal purposes and tax results are different.

Now if the property was being used for personal purposes during that time some of your rental expenses can not be claimed including a portion of depreciation.

If you believe your 2016 return is incorrect (mistakenly answered the property was used for personal purposes for a time), amend your 2016 return to correct.

Why is the depreciation on a rental property not fully taken

That helped a lot. Now that I have assigned the property as rental for the entire 2016 I can see that the sheet 8852 is showing a loss carryover . I will be sending the amended return.

Now the problem is how to input this information into Turbotax online for 2017 ? I went into the asset screen in Turbotax online. It shows me the prior depreciation taken and other details. However I dont see any location where I can override the loss carryover from prior years. Please advise.

Thanks
