Where do I claim capital gains listed on a 1099 DIV

I completed a 1099 DIV which included some dividends and a $3,000  in capital gains. The income section only lists the dividend income. How do I know if the capital gain has registered. I don't want to underreport and have to refile.

Enter the capital gains reported on Form 1099-DIV in the Form 1099-DIV section.  TurboTax will take the capital gains distribution amount to Schedule D line 13 where it will be included with any other capital gains that may be entered as part of your return.  You will also see it reported as part of Form 1040 line 7.

Use the following steps to preview Form 1040 using TurboTax Online to take a look at line 7:

  • In the navigation area on the left side of your screen, click Tax Tools to expand your choices
  • Click Tools, which will open the Tool Center
  • Click View Tax Summary under “Other Helpful Links…
  • Click Preview My 1040 to see your actual tax form
