Remember, the reason for the question is to determine long term (more than one year) or short term holding. Look through your financial records to determine the investment date.
Also frequently for mutual fund sales when the purchases were made at multiple times (e.g. dollar-cost averaging), it is acceptable to enter "various" for the acquisition date and if necessary (depending upon other information on the 1099-B) manually enter the long (> 1 yr) /short term status. (Long term rates are much lower).
This may apply to more than mutual funds (purchased at multiple times but sold on the same day), but you typically see it on fund sales.
