Turbo tax desktop vs online discrepancy for rental depreciation

Hi everyone,

Last year we filed our taxes using the TurboTax Desktop version, and this year we’re using TurboTax Premier Online.

After importing and reviewing last year’s return for reference, we noticed a discrepancy in the rental property depreciation calculations between the Desktop version (2024 return) and the Online version (2025 return).

The depreciation amounts and prior depreciation shown do not match, even though the asset details (cost basis, land value, placed-in-service date, etc.) appear to be the same.

I’ve attached screenshots for comparison. Could someone help explain why this difference is occurring and how to correct it in TurboTax Online?

Thank you!

Please advise where the discrepancy can be found.

I assume that one is depreciation after calculating 2024 depreciation and the second is depreciation before 2025 depreciation is calculated?

Thank you.

Hi!

$425,899 over a period of 27.5 years is $15,487 which shows correctly in 2024 tax year.

However, in 2025 tax year, it shows as $15,569. Additionally prior depreciation should be 5808+15,487 = $21,295 but it is showing $19,163 which doesn't match with previous year.

Please let me know how to fix this issue. Thanks

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. Please notify me by adding @AmyC to your response. If I discover a solution, I will reply. Otherwise, it will be moved on to an investigation team.

You can send a token to me by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:
Sign into your online account.
Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:
Open your return.
Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent”
This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

Appreciate your response. Here is the token number 1352174. @AmyC

I suspect last year tax 2024 return wasn't ported correctly to online version this year. The amount shown here is incorrect for comparison, it was $28,602 instead of $25,000

If you spot discrepancies in carryover amounts after importing a prior year .tax20XX file from the desktop software into TurboTax Online, the following troubleshooting steps can be taken:

  1. Double check that the prior year .tax file hasn't been changed or saved-over since submitting.
  2. Double check that the most recent or applicable .tax file is the one you've selected to import (sometimes people create test scenarios for MFJ vs. MFS - make sure you haven't selected a test file accidentally)
  3. Try re-importing the .tax file again, and go straight to the problem areas of the return to check that the data pulled in cleanly on the 2nd attempt.
    • Note: this will clear all current year data entered so far.
