No, those are not the same. I think you are mixing up a Form 1099-DIV with a 1099-MISC.
Ordinary dividends, capital gains distributions, etc. are reported on a 1099-DIV. Do you have a 1099-DIV? Don't enter a 1099-DIV in the 1099-MISC interview. Or if your form from American Century doesn't say "1099-DIV" it could be a proprietary form such as a "consolidated brokerage statement" rather than a separate 1099-DIV.
