I reported my oil royalty last year online with the cheaper turbotax software version. How?

You will need Premier or Self-Employed to report it online. You can use desktop version of Deluxe but for online, you need at least Premier to enter it. If you enter in a lower version online, it will prompt you to upgrade to proceed with entering it.

The TurboTax online version will require you to upgrade to Premier at minimum to input royalties. That is because only Premier and Self-Employed online versions handle Schedule E, which is where those royalties are reported.

But you can use the desktop version of Deluxe and input it there as well. The desktop version of Deluxe will handle Schedule E. You can find the desktop version here https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/compare/desktop/
