The amount TT shows as tax exempt int on 1040 line a2 doesn't not match the various amounts on 1099's

TT references generally the tax exempt sources/forms, but there is no smart worksheet that actually shows the  amounts it is using which total to the total amount it is using on line 2a.  When I add the amounts from my 1099's they do not total the amount TT is using on 1040 line 2a.  So I filed my returns using TT's number, but I would like to know how they came up with it.

Is box 2a higher or lower than the total you calculated?

It's most commonly lower due to certain Premium amortization amounts on 1099-INT forms, box 13.  Also (on a 1099-INT) for indicating Accrued Interest you may have paid when buying a bond during 2025.

2a can be higher for certain 1099-OID amounts

2a can also be higher if you had certain K-1 forms entered that have tax-exempt amounts that you forgot to include.

Following the 1040/1040SR Wks: Tax Exempt Interest was very confusing so I went to the IRS and google.

I have added 1099INT box 8 to 1099DIV box 12 .  No K-1s, S corps, or Estate & trusts.

I have subtracted 1099INT box 11 and 1099INT box 13.

I have added 1099OID box 11.

The total of the above is over $400 less than TT's 1040 line 2a and there is no entry or combination of entrys that come to that amount.

TT verbiage where 2a comes from is not helpful.  There needs to be a smart worksheet that shows the dollars and cents that make up the total on 2a along with the sorce for each dollar.

You do not subtract box 11 on the 1099-INT form.

Those $$ refer only to box 1.....and box 1 are taxable $$.

The verbiage I got said to subtract it, no matter I have eliminated that.  Now the difference is 321.52.   The only thing close is the 1099 OID box 11 for 321.81 which is added  to the 1099-INT box 8 number, etc.  I have sent an email to Wells Fargo to see if they know of any reason why TT picked this amount up twice.  That would eliminate the difference.   The TT Smart Worksheet for Schedule B:  interest and dividend Income has 321.81 listed twice.  Box 11 on 1099 OID has 321.81.  As I said previously, I added that amount to my reconciliation and I am still off by 321.52.

I have alaready filed my taxes because I have been using TT for over 40 years (back when it was in DOS) and have never seen an error in calculation and assumed the number was right and I would find the error somewhere in my reconciliation.  This may be a first.   How do I get in touch with TT so they can verify how many times they picked up box 11 and forward to me whatever I need to amend my taxes?

You could always try Customer Support.

I Just don't know how you get someone knowledgeable enough to help.

If they ask for a diagnostic file...perhaps they will look into it.
