We rented our house out for 10 years and now we are moving back in. Unfortunately a lot of work is needed to repair some items, such as roof replacement, dishwasher replacement and painting and so on.
Are we allowed to deduct these costs from our taxes as repairs to a rental property?

No. Repairs and improvements to a home that was no longer available to be rented are not rental expenses.
I agreed with @AmeliesUncle.
However, you can still add the cost of improvements (such as the cost of replacing your entire roof) to the basis of your property (which will have an effect when you eventually sell).
