As you go through your state return, most states have a section for 'Additions'. If you see that as an option, you could include the income as an addition to your state income.
If you do not see this as an option, share which state you are filing and someone may be able to give you more specific instructions.
Thank you, Annette. My filing state is Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate the "additional income" section on the turbo tax website and have not been able to figure out how to report that income for state purposes only, and not for federal. I know I must not be the only person in what I believe is a fairly common situation. If anyone one else with a PA state filing situation of short term rental income under 14 days for 2025, could chime in, I would greatly appreciate it. - Don
In TurboTax Online, in the Pennsylvania state income tax return, income not reported on the Federal income tax return but reported on the Pennsylvania income tax return may be reported at the screen Any other miscellaneous compensation.
Same question as original post, but where do you include your expenses?
It depends. Under the federal 'Augusta Rule' (IRC §280A(g)), which is followed for federal and generally for Pennsylvania state income tax purposes, if you rent out your primary residence or vacation home for 14 days or less per year, the rental income is not taxable, and you cannot deduct rental expenses. The income is entirely excluded, and expenses related to those days are not allowed.
There could be different taxes that apply in this situation but not income tax.
If you are referring to a different state please update here and we can help.
