I work in DC but I am a resident of SC and do not go to DC the 183 days.

Hi all,

I am trying to file my taxes and I am stuck.  I currently work in DC but am a resident of SC.  When I went to file state taxes I have both DC and SC.  For DC Turbotax said to file the form where DC will return my taxes paid to them because I do not live there.  However when I did my SC state return next, it said I just owe a pentaly on not paying SC taxes on time, but did not calculate what I would owe.  And now Turbotax is saying everything is done and I can submit SC and federal online, but DC I have to print and mail with the form.

I am just concerned this is not correct and what I need to do.  Specific help would be super great on what I need to do

State taxes can get complicated when you are living in one state and working in another.

There are a number of questions that need to be addressed to provide an accurate response; are you remote, are you working in SC for the convenience of the employer, etc.

At a quick glance, you probably should meet with your payroll or HR department to see if you should complete D.C form D-4A.  This form indicates you are a nonresident of D.C. and there should be no D.C. withholding and there should be only SC withholding.

At a high level, it does appear that you only owe tax to SC.

You may not owe any tax to South Carolina, as sometimes your employer will withhold the exact amount of tax you owe on the state return, as it is much simpler than the federal return. I suggest you look at your South Carolina tax return summary and see if the correct amount of income and deductions is showing there as follows:

While working on your state return:

  1. Choose Tax Tools from your left menu bar in TurboTax Online while working in your program
  2. Choose Tools
  3. Choose View Tax Summary

Thank you so much for your helpful response! It is really hard to figure out, hoping to uncomplicate things for next taxes.

I am teleworking from SC due to health reasons.

I feel like the nonresident form is the right move? I just don’t want to be punished later, so I guess I just have to keep the documentation.
