I sold a few stories to an online gazette and received proceeds. However, there are no royalties. The amount is greater than $600. How does this affect my filing?

The gazette should issue you a 1099-MISC for a total amount greater than $600. It could be that you just haven't received it yet. The deadline for mailing is 1/31.

The IRS considers this self employment income and this will be recorded on Schedule C. You can also write off any associated expenses incurred during your work.

See below for navigation of entering self-employment income and expenses to produce Schedule C.

Thank you.  Does that also include hobbyist writing?  I'm not a full-time writer.
