Rent paid is not deductible on a federal tax return.

Rent paid for your primary residence, 2nd home or any other 'personal use' property is not deductible on a federal return. However, if your state taxes your personal income, some states offer a "renter's credit" on the state tax return. If your state has such a thing, you won't deal with it until you get to the state return.
