I just submitted my Federal Return. I currently own a rental property in NY that I rented for all of 2016. Do I need to submit a NY State return too?

My pay property tax in NY and receive income that I listed on my federal return. Do I also need to file a state return with NY? Thank you!

Yes, if you don't live in NY state but you have income from your rental property in NY, you need to file a nonresident state tax return.

I started the state tax return from NY, but don't have a W-2... just the rental info that got imported from my federal return. When complete I didn't owe or receive a return. Maybe I didn't do it properly? Can someone walk me through that filing?

This could be the result of reporting your rental income to NY, especially if this is the only income you had from NY. You still need to report it, though. You can contact us if you'd like to speak to an agent by clicking on "Contact" at the top right corner of your screen, and clicking the "Contact Us" button on the right hand side of the window. Follow the instructions to choose a way to contact us.
