I don't understand why we are getting QBI tax break. Our income comes from W-2s and dividends and stock sales. So what could've triggered QBI for us?

Do you have dividends from REITS?

So even though neither of us is self employed or own a business, having REIT divs qualifies?

Do you have dividends from REITS? Look at Box 5 on the 1099-Divs for Section 199A dividends. Those are eligible for QBI (ridiculous or not).
