Hawaii's Non-Resident return will start with your federal income. So column A, of the N-15 SHOULD include the income from the TX rental. In column B, this should not be there. If you are seeing it there, you will need to walk through the Hawaii state questions until you reach the income allocation section. Here you will remove the TX rental income from your HI return.
If you were a resident of Hawaii, all of your income, even from other states is taxable to Hawaii unless specifically excluded from taxation under HI tax laws.
For most states, if you have a property you pay taxes to the state the property is in, then you take a credit or deduction (depending on how the state works) for taxes paid to the other state. However, since TX does not have any state income tax, you would just report the income from the rental property on your resident return and pay taxes to your resident state for the income.

I have a rental property in Hawaii but I'm not a resident of Hawaii. I spent 0 day in Hawaii in 2025.
So can I just say $0 of the Texas rental income belongs to the State of Hawaii, since there's not an option to remove it from the form?
@Vanessa A is correct. Your state of residence has a claim on all of your income. What is that state?
Reporting $0 Texas rental income would also report $0 Texas rental income to your state of residence.
Are you reporting a Hawaii state income tax return just to report the rental property in Hawaii?
The software uses the physical address of the rental property to assign the rental property to a state income tax return.
Has an incorrect zip code or address been entered to the Texas property? Please clarify.
I'm a California resident.
Yes I'm reporting a Hawaii return just for the rental property in Hawaii.
I put in the correct address, Zip code and state for the Texas property, so a little confused why it shows up in the Hawaii return.
Thanks, @JamesG1
If you would like to send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information it would help. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: (Don't forget to give us the state)
TurboTax Online:
Open your return -Go to the menu panel on the left side of your return and select Tax Tools.
TurboTax Desktop:
If you like, you can send a copy of your return that will be scrubbed to eliminate your personal data by using these steps:
We will be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return to provide you with a resolution.
This makes perfect sense now. Thank you!
I followed Vanessa's instructions, checked the form N-15 and saw the Hawaii property only showing in Column B. I understand how this works now. Thanks!
