How do you determine short term or long term on 1099-B (selling stock)?

It depends. There are a couple of different ways to tell if a transaction is short term or long term.

  1. You can compare Line 1B with 1C. If the dates are within one year of each other, than the sale is short term.
  2. Also you can look at Box 2 of the 1099B and it has three choices. Short term gain and loss, long-term gain and loss, ordinary.
  3. If you have a 1099B summary sheet with multiple transactions, the summary totals will be separated into long or short term transactions and will indicate this in the summary totals.

If you held the stock for more than one year  it is considered long term ...  one year or less is short term.

Example: An investment you bought on Jan. 15, 2020 became long term om Jan. 16, 2021.  If the date of sale was after Jan. 15, 2021, the gain was long term.  Any earlier sale date is short term.
