How do I file Airbnb income if I did not get a 1099?

In 2016 I rented an extra room in my house using Airbnb. I made under $3,000 and am not sure how to file this. I did not get any form of 1099. Is this self-employment or something else?

Income from renting a portion of your home is entered in the Rental Income and Expenses section of your return and reported on Schedule E.

This is not considered self-employment income.

You do not need a Form 1099-MISC in order to report your income.  There will be a box to enter any rental income received that was not reported on a Form 1099-MISC.

To get started with this section of your return, use these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

  • This opens a box where you can type in “rental income and expenses” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to rental income and expenses

  • Click on the blue “Jump to rental income and expenses” link

TurboTax will guide you step-by-step through the process.
