Earlier Year Tax Return Smart Worksheet issue

The Earlier Year Tax Return Smart Worksheet is reporting an error on Line D.  I tried changing it with the + key, which was blank initially, and the error persist.  Is this a bug?

Also the help for where to find this item stops in 2021, thought my 2024 tax return was correct for the line to use.

I did check and the software is current.

Line D is looking for your total tax reported on your 2023 tax return. Look at your 2023 tax return, 1040 line 24 and enter that number on your Line D.

In case the program still isn't happy:

If you are using the download version, you can switch to Forms Mode and looks for red exclamation marks.

  1. You can enter or delete there.
  2. You may need to right click and override. Perhaps forcing a zero on line D if you didn't file for 2023.
  3. If you do override something, go back through step-by-step to see if the program can pick up the new information and incorporate it.
  4. Then you should be able to go back in Forms mode and cancel the override and file successfully.

First off 2023?  The previous to 2025 is 2024. The taxes for 2024 is what the IRS is going to adjust for a SS lump payment in 2025 that part of it was for 2024.

When I right click on the box I see the option to ingore the error but nothing happens.

Why is it telling me something is not right?  What does it know?  I should be able to put in anything.  I hoped TT would have populated the box since it imported the 2024 data.

I still need help.

Amy C said it was looking for year 2023.  Should be 2024 which is the previous year to 2025.

Line D on Earlier Year Tax Return Smart Worksheett is looking for the part of my SS that was taxable, not the total tax reported. That is found on Line 6b on the 2024 1040A.  Amy C said it was looking for the totall tax reported.  Maybe she was on the wrong form.

Most of the right click options do nothing, including override.  I am able to add details.  They only way to get this box not be red is to enter 0 for the amount.  Then line 7 of the worksheet below also goes to 0, which is not the correct value.

If it knows the correct value, what is it not auto upulating?  I have been using TT for many years.

This has to be a bug in the checking software.

Form: Earlier Year Lump Sum Social Security Worksheet.  Then to the Earlier Year Tax Return Smart Worksheet. Line D

Also, How about updating the information to reflect the current year, or just say "After 2020 use 6b."

Actually, you're correct.  The prior year information should just carry over here.  I'm hot sure what has caused it to not.  But, on the upside, this has no effect on your ability to file your tax return for this year.

Thanks for the assist.

TTax updated today (but not yesterday's check) and it still did not correct ithe error.

Can TT sofware engineers look into why the checking process is flagging this?  I did some playing around and found if I put in $0, it was ok.   That changed my tax due by about $500, making me owe instead of a refund.   Any other amount caused it to turn red.   I am going to look closely at the actual form and see if the number jive with what I found at the IRS site.   I hope it is correct.

I figured it out.  There was an error, but not on that line.  I noticed line 1 of the worksheet form said ALL (a quote) the SSA-1099 forms for the earlier year plus the lump sum.  It only had the lump sum for this year.  TTax failed to import the SSA 1099 data for my income from 2024  1040 (line 6a), and when initially filling out the lump sum questions, I overlooked the box in the grid that should have had my 2024 benefits entered. Once I filled in that box the error went away, and so did my refund. Drat.

The error checking probably should have flagged both B and D since they are intertwined.  This explained why 0 worked.  The reason for the error should have been explained, not just a "check engine light".  That would have saved me many hours and your time.
