Can the person I support file their own taxes as well? They make 1000$ a month but in order to pay rent and utilities I transfer 1635$ every month from my paycheck to them?

I help my girlfriend out with the bills on the West Coast because she does not make enough money working at Starbucks to pay them off. I want to make sure that me stating that I support her will not affect her tax return.

If her gross 2016 income exceeded $10,350, she MUST file her own tax return.

You cannot claim her as a dependent if her own 2016 gross income was $4050 or more.

Unless you are expecting her to repay the money you are advancing her, and you have documentation of that, it is considered a gift for tax purposes, and that money is neither deductible by you nor taxable to her.

If the amount you gave her in 2016 exceeded the annual gift tax exclusion amount of $14,000, you may have to file a gift tax return, IRS Form 709.
