Rent you pay for your primary residence, 2nd home or any other "personal use" property is not reported anywhere on the federal return. It's not deductible. However, if your state taxes personal income, some states have a "renter's credit" based on the rent you paid during the tax year. You won't be asked about that until you complete the federal return and are working on the state return.... and only if the state offers such a credit.
RENT
There is not a rent deduction or credit on your Federal return. If your state has anything for renters you will be prompted to enter your rent info when you complete your state return. As far as I know, the states that have anything for rent are Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington DC, and Wisconsin.
